Tristar: growth and change in difficult times. http://www.tristar-oilfield-services.co.uk//news/Tristar-growth-and-change-in-difficult-times/ Tue, 06 Dec 2011 00:00:00 GMT Press Release: 4th December 2011:

Forfar-based Tristar Oilfield Solutions & Training Ltd. have had a busy year, with large-scale alterations of their premises, increased business and the arrival of three new members of staff.

Tristar have grown so much that they have had to double the size of their training room, introduce a reception area, and recruit one new trainer and two job-sharing receptionists.  The training room now has space for 14 trainees during seminars, and there is enough room for desks to be separated to meet exam requirements.

The refurbishment was all achieved using local firms and completed on time despite some unexpected hitches in the build.  John D. Crawford Ltd. of Montrose created the design and got the planning permissions, Henson Projects of Dundee provided all trades and managed the project, and the flooring was supplied by The Floor Studio of Carnoustie.  Tristar, John D Crawford Ltd. and The Floor Studio are all members of BNI Nexus, a business group that meets weekly in Montrose.

Not only have Tristar created more training space, they are also producing and running more seminars than before.  They teach wire-line courses using their own unique simulator which has been round the world several times and still runs on an Acorn computer (an upgrade to MS Windows is in development).  One trainee said the simulation was so life-like that if there had also been the smell of oil he would have believed he was in the middle of the North Sea.   In addition they run courses at all levels on coiled tubing techniques.

Tristar are also IWCF accredited trainers and currently have a trainer supplying two IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control courses in Syria for 30 personnel.  One instructor speaks Arabic fluently, and this year the company has provided trainings in Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Serbia and Indonesia, as well as in Malaysia where they have run three courses in the past six months.

In the Forfar premises Tristar only provide theory classes.  For practical training they use clients' own on-site facilities, materials and equipment.  They also have an extensive technical library from which they create bespoke training, operational and procedural manuals for many of their clients.

One reason for Tristar's increased work-load is that bigger companies in the oil and gas industry are discovering the benefits of outsourcing their training rather than having to keep a trainer busy all year.  Tristar are small enough to provide courses on demand, even one-to-one if necessary.

As the Tristar Directors say, "We may be only little, but we can compete with the big guys.  The difference is that we provide a personal service.  Everyone we work with is a name, not a number, and they can contact us 24 hours a day - and do!".

In addition to their training and technical publication arms Tristar have a bank of fully qualified personnel for hire to the oil and gas industry, who are distributed even further worldwide than the training courses.

In what has proved a difficult year for many businesses Tristar have shown that staying small and light-footed can pay off and that staying still is definitely not an option.
